The initial tasks of ILIFO was to take over and further propagate many of the pilot and demonstration projects established by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to address critical environmental challenges of leather manufacture under its Regional Programme for Pollution Control in the Tanning Industry in South East Asia.

Apart from effluent treatment plants, reverse osmosis plants to recover and re-use tannery wastewater, ILIFO is involved in infrastructure projects Testing laboratories, Design Studios and Trade Centers. These are intended to improve productivity by improved product design and quality, value engineering products for better conversion efficiency, energy conservation, health and safety issues, workplace environment and materials handling.

Many of these projects are assisted by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Government of India - Ministry of Commerce and Industry - through the Council for Leather Exports (CLE).
